Optimixed Overview
Optimixed's original report on this story.
According to Search Engine Land's analysis of over 15 variables across 3,000 listicles, freshness emerged as the clearest ranking signal—top-3 pages carried publication dates from the previous two years 66.6% of the time versus 57.3% in positions 8–10, and outdated or unreadable dates were linked to 56% lower odds of ranking in the top 3. Counted listicles (those with explicit numbers in the title, like "17 Best Tools") outperformed editorial roundups in direct matchups 56.8% of the time and ranked higher on average (position 3.77 vs. 4.59), with larger title numbers correlating to stronger positions; unexpectedly, excessive section headings actually lowered ranking odds by 29%.
