TLDR

SparkToro's latest data shows zero-click searches hit 68% in early 2026, driven primarily by Google's AI Overviews and other on-results features, not AI Mode—signaling that SEO now earns visibility for AI systems to quote rather than direct traffic.

SparkToro reports that 68% of U.S. Google searches in the first four months of 2026 ended without a click to any website, marking the fastest acceleration of zero-click growth in a decade. Google's AI Overviews, which appear on over 20% of searches and reduce click-through rates by nearly 60%, account for much of the shift, though AI Mode itself remains negligible. Per analysis from Cyrus Shepard cited in the piece, winning sites in a zero-click world share five traits: they offer a product or service, own proprietary assets, stay niche-focused, carry recognizable brands, and crucially let users complete tasks—with sites having four or five of these features winning searches roughly 70% of the time versus just 15% for those with only one.
