boltTLDR
SaaS brands earn 84–93% of AI search citations from third-party sources, with ChatGPT and AI Mode relying on fundamentally different evidence ecosystems requiring separate distribution strategies.
Aleyda Solis analyzed citation patterns across 15 leading SaaS brands and domains to understand how ChatGPT and Google AI Mode generate answers, finding that external sources dominate citation weight and that the two platforms prioritize entirely different content types. While ChatGPT anchors on written evaluative content from reviews, tech publications, and vendor docs, AI Mode heavily favors video (~23%), social content, and creator platforms. The research identifies five repeatable patterns: most AI citation weight comes from outside your domain; the platforms rely on different evidence types; they cite different parts of your own site; owned pages rarely drive measurable AI referral traffic; and final destination URLs serve distinct purposes depending on the task stage, requiring separate optimization strategies rather than a unified approach.
