ChatGPT Topic Ownership Is Rare, and Traditional SEO Metrics Don't Explain Why

TLDR

Semrush found only 15% of ChatGPT topic categories have clear brand owners, and traditional SEO metrics poorly predict which brands dominate AI search results.

Per Semrush's analysis of 1,094 U.S. ChatGPT categories spanning January through June 2026, just 15.2% had a clear dominant brand—meaning roughly 85% of categories lack a strong owner. Search Engine Land reports that brand mentions in ChatGPT's answer text, rather than citations, matter most for topic ownership, yet even traditional SEO strength like organic traffic and Authority Score failed to reliably predict winners. Strikingly, branded search volume was the only metric that reached statistical significance, suggesting that AI search visibility operates by different rules than organic search.
