AI Traffic and Citations Represent Two Distinct SEO Visibility Layers, New Data Shows

72
Analysis

TLDR

AI traffic remains tiny versus organic search, but AI citations reveal a distinct visibility layer that matters for discovery and evaluation—requiring separate measurement strategies.

Optimixed Overview

Optimixed's original report on this story.

Aleyda Solis analyzed April 2026 Semrush data across 40 sites in travel, finance, real estate, and retail to reveal that organic search still dominates at roughly 20.45% of visits versus 0.19% for AI traffic. More importantly, the analysis shows that pages receiving AI clicks differ significantly from pages cited in AI answers: brand-entry pages capture 57.7% of AI traffic but only 3.0% of citations, while discovery and evaluation pages account for 57.0% of citations but just 8.9% of traffic. The finding challenges marketers to track AI presence, citations, and referral traffic as separate KPIs rather than conflating them into a single metric.
