TLDR

An audit of 71 Canadian businesses found that AI search systems can verify only 16% of business identity on average, due to technical and structural gaps most businesses can fix.

Search Engine Land reports on an original audit of 71 verified businesses across multiple industries that reveals what the author calls an "identity leak"—the gap between what a business actually is and what AI search systems can verify about it. The audit found the average business leaking 84% of its identity, with 17% having zero AI-retrievable digital presence. Common culprits include client-side JavaScript rendering with no static fallback, trust signals buried on secondary pages rather than homepages, and fractured digital identities across dead domains or multiple sites.
